Intellectual property law is the legal area where laws and precedents regulate the right to protection for various kinds of intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, patterns, copyright for literary and artistic works, coats of arms and names.

Intellectual property is an idea that can in effect be protected through, e.g., patents, trademarks and/or copyright. Such protection is more important than ever before and companies are increasingly seeing the competitive importance of investing resources in securing and protecting their intellectual property in the countries where they operate.

Market law encompasses marketing and competition law. Market law focuses on, for example, if a certain marketing measure can be considered permissible or if a company is penalised because of a competitor’s illegal actions on the market. The Marketing Practices Act and the Competition Act are the two legal acts that specifically regulate this legal field, although the Act on Public Procurement may also be applied when various competition law queries arise. The regulation on market law is intended to promote a level playing field on the market and prevent unfair competition. Infringements can lead to sanctions in the form of damages.
